We are pleased to share some important updates regarding our fee structure and processing times for Letters of Professional Standing (LOPS) and Letters of Standing and Professional Conduct (LSPC), effective August 1, 2024. Under the new Fees and Remuneration By-law, the fee for issuing a LOPS or LSPC for a registrant will be $50. All letters will now be issued within seven days.
Previously, the fee for the College to issue a LOPS or LSPC for a registrant was $40 if requested and issued within 15 days, and $60 if requested and issued within five business days. Most requests were for the five-business-day timeframe, so most registrants were paying $60 for their request.
Council’s decision to update the Fees and Remuneration By-law came after a thorough review and public consultation. Their goal was to make fees more equitable and proportional, reflect operational resources, and streamline fee practices and processes.
These changes are designed to simplify the processes and create a uniform fee and delivery timeline. By standardizing the fees and reducing the options for different timelines, we aim to streamline the procedure, making it more straightforward and efficient for everyone. Additionally, the College has redesigned each form to clearly indicate its specific purpose.
We believe these updates and information will enhance the overall experience of our registrants by providing clarity and consistency in our services. For more information, please visit our website here or contact us at conduct@cmo.on.ca.
A LOPS is normally required by Ontario hospitals, birth centres, midwifery practice groups, midwifery regulators outside of Canada, and other institutions for privileging purposes, employment, or to confirm registration.
An LSPC is required by other Canadian midwifery regulators for registration applications outside Ontario but within Canada.
Did you know that the College’s public register contains all the information provided in a LOPS, is updated in real-time, and can be downloaded as a timestamped PDF? This can be used instead of a LOPS, subject to the policies of hospitals and birth centres. We encourage midwives to check with these institutions to see if this option meets their privileging requirements. Hospitals and birth centres can access the public register at any time to verify information. Using the public register instead of LOPS reduces timeframes and eliminates processing costs for midwives, as it does not require any College processing time.
