2023-24 Annual Report Published
The 2023-24 Annual Report highlights some of the accomplishments we made in the fiscal year and speaks to some of our achievements over the last 30 years of regulated midwifery in Ontario. We believe our commitment to regulatory excellence is evident throughout the document.
Recognizing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On September 30, we paused for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and reflected on the profound injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada. Particularly, we recognize the traumatic legacy of the residential school system and the 150,000 children who endured it, honouring the survivors and the memory of those who did not return home. The College is actively reviewing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and working to develop our Reconciliation Action Plan.
Board Highlights
At the October 2 Board meeting, Directors reviewed governance changes, appointed the external auditor for the next fiscal year, and more.
Changes to the College’s Board
The College thanks outgoing Board Directors Hardeep Fervaha, RM; Jacqueline Morrison; and Naa Yoyo Nartey-Khama, RM; and welcomes Lynne-Marie Culliton, RM and Anna Boudria to the Board.
Registrar Report
Each quarter, in advance of the College’s Board Meeting, the Registrar-CEO prepares her Quarterly Report to assure the Board that the College operates effectively and achieves its strategic goals, and that the Registrar performs per the expected duties outlined in the Board’s Governance Policies.
New Registrant Resource on College Website
All midwives in their first year of practice (after receiving their initial certificate of registration) in the general class are working under New Registrant conditions. We have put together a helpful website with all the information New Registrants need in their first year of practice.
October 1 Requirements
Thank you to all midwives who completed their registration renewal by the October 1 deadline.
This was also the first year that certain midwives were due to declare completion of the first cycle of the Professional Development Portfolio. We’re happy to report that 92% of midwives that were due to report declared their completion of the Professional Development Portfolio by the October 1 deadline.
We continue to welcome questions from any midwives who are due to report on the Professional Development Portfolio for the first time in the next two years.
30 Years of Regulating in the Public Interest
For 30 years, we have worked to ensure that midwives in Ontario are qualified, skilled, and competent to practise so all Ontarians can be confident in the care they receive from registered midwives. We have supported midwives in providing their best care to clients – and we’ve been there for clients when they need us.
Since the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Midwifery Act, 1991, were enacted on January 1, 1994, Ontario’s midwives have been fully integrated within the public health care system and care for parents and babies through pregnancy, childbirth, and into infancy.
We’ve put together a timeline celebrating milestones from the last 30+ years of regulated midwifery in Ontario.
