Practice Advisory: New Prenatal Screening Program is Live!

Prenatal Screening Ontario (PSO) has announced that publicly funded fetal blood group genotyping (FBGG) is now available in Ontario. These new tests expand PSO’s services and support more personalized, efficient, and equitable prenatal care for pregnant individuals across Ontario. Requisitions can be found on their website.

Midwives are permitted to order fetal blood group genotyping, as these tests are listed under the Laboratory Specimens Collection Centre and Licensing Act, Schedule 2: Requisition by Midwife.

Though the regulation permits midwives to order these tests, it has come to our attention that there may be a lag between the launch of the PSO program and community laboratories readiness to process requisitions from midwives. We anticipate this will be resolved soon.
