At the College of Midwives of Ontario, we are reviewing and refining our approach to regulation, which includes simplifying our standards of practice. Our findings show that our current standards of practice are rigid, complex, and can be difficult to interpret.
We believe midwives do not need a lot of detailed, prescriptive rules to practise competently, ethically, and safely. That is why our Council has decided to apply a more principles-based approach to the development of the standards of practice. The Professional Standards for Midwives (Professional Standards) is the first stage in a broader review of College standards.
The College is committed to delivering a modern, evidence informed approach to regulation, based on the principles of good regulation that focus on our core purpose of protecting the public. Targeted, proportionate regulation is key to that. Click here for more information on how to share your feedback.
