Policies and Legislation

The role of the College, its authority, and its powers are set out in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA); the Health Professions Procedural Code (which is Schedule 2 to the RHPA); and the Midwifery Act, 1991. In addition, there are specific regulations made under both the RHPA and the Midwifery Act.

The College has also established policies for its programs and operations that midwives, their clients, or the public can review to learn more about how the College handles the corresponding subject matter.

Consultations

The work we do impacts a number of individuals and organizations, including midwifery clients, midwives, government, regulatory, and midwifery organizations. Therefore, we make it a high priority to engage with all of our stakeholders when considering the establishment of or changes to policies.

It’s important that regulatory policy is developed in a clear, accountable, and transparent manner, in accordance with best practices. Open consultation is a critical part of our policy development.
