We are asking all midwives to complete a 10-minute survey.
We have heard concerns about the sustainability of clinical placements for midwifery students and learners across Ontario. Clinical placements are essential to preparing future midwives. However, growing demands on midwives and practice settings can make it more difficult to provide and sustain high-quality learning experiences. We want to better understand the challenges and opportunities, identify what is working well, and learn what supports would make preceptorship more sustainable.
Your feedback will directly inform a sector-wide strategy meeting in September. Partners from across the profession will meet to identify and consider what practical system-level changes can strengthen clinical education. Together, we will explore ways to better support midwives who teach and mentor learners. This work will help ensure Ontarians continue to have access to safe, high-quality midwifery care.
Who should complete the survey?
All midwives are asked to complete the 10-minute survey.
Each MPG, EMCM and IMP should also choose one person to answer an additional five minutes of questions on behalf of their practice or site. The selected person will identify themselves as the placement coordinator to access the additional questions in the survey.
The survey will close 9:00am on Monday, August 10, 2026. Please share your feedback before then.

Why your input matters
Every clinical placement depends on midwives who are willing and able to teach. Your preceptorship helps prepare the next generation of skilled colleagues and strengthens the future of the profession. Whether or not you have offered placements recently, your perspective is important. Your feedback will help identify the supports needed to make preceptorship more sustainable and ensure midwifery learners have access to the clinical experiences they need for safe, competent entry to practice.
Strengthening clinical education supports the long-term sustainability of the midwifery workforce and helps ensure Ontarians continue to have access to safe, high-quality midwifery care.
This is not a research study. It is an opportunity to share your experiences and ideas. Your feedback will help identify priorities and shape practical solutions to address the challenges facing clinical education and preceptorship.
About this initiative
The Ontario Midwifery Strategy Council (OMSC) is working with partners from across the profession. The following organizations provided input on the survey and will meet in September to review the data together:

- Toronto Birth Centre and the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre
While each of us bring unique perspectives, expertise, and responsibilities to this work, our roles are complementary and meaningful progress depends on working together toward shared solutions.
The feedback gathered through this survey will ensure that the discussions and priorities identified at the September strategy meeting are informed by the diverse experiences and perspectives of midwives from across Ontario.
