Blood Borne Viruses Standard – Rescinded January 1, 2026

The College of Midwives of Ontario Board rescinded the Blood Borne Virus Standard following recent policy changes made by other health regulators and after conducting an equity review. Some other factors that the Board considered are listed in this article.

Call for Nominations Committee Members

The College’s Board of Directors has recently approved the establishment of a Nominations Committee and is looking to recruit and appoint three to four persons to the Committee. The Nominations Committee is a new non-statutory committee responsible for facilitating recruitment, appointments, and elections processes for the College’s Board and Committees, in alignment with the College’s By-laws, policies, and reporting requirements.

Addressing Ableism in Health Care – Webinar

On December 3, the College was pleased to partner with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario to host a webinar on Addressing Ableism in Health Care, presented by Dr. Hilary Brown (University of Toronto). Held on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the session offered an important opportunity to reflect on how health systems – including midwifery care – can more effectively identify, interrupt, and prevent ableism.

Supporting Scope Expansion for Other Health Care Providers

The College of Midwives of Ontario recently had the opportunity to express our support for several proposed expansions to professional scope: for chiropractors, chiropodists, dental hygienists, denturists, optometrists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and speech-language pathologists. These expansions were largely to medications these professionals can prescribe and administer, and access to diagnostic imaging.
